If the captain is the brain of a starship, then the ship’s engineer is its heart. Aboard the Constitution-class Starship Enterprise, that heart was Chief Engineering Officer Montgomery Scott. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland on Earth in 2222, he was known to his shipmates and friends as “Scotty.”
Montgomery Scott’s engineering prowess was the stuff of Starfleet legend. Even under the most extreme circumstances, Scott almost always seemed to find a way to keep his engines working, ensuring crew safety and mission success. Perhaps it was because Scott seemed to have an almost mystical connection to complex mechanical systems. Or perhaps it was because of his rare combination of an extremely conservative work ethic with a creative, often unorthodox style of problem solving. On more than one occasion, Scott’s engineering brilliance under pressure of critical emergencies led him to develop solutions so innovative that they almost seemed to defy the laws of physics.
Although Scott served aboard eleven different ships during the course of his distinguished career, he is best known as chief engineer for the Constitution-class Starship Enterprise during a legendary five-year mission of deep space exploration under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. Scott never sought command of a starship, preferring to take responsibility for the awesome star drive machinery that was his first love.
Even though Scott’s career took him to countless planets across the galaxy, his rich Scottish brogue left no doubt to anyone who met him that his heart remained firmly ensconced in his native Scotland. His love of his cultural heritage was reflected in his adoption of a traditional Scottish kilt as part of his Starfleet dress uniform, as well as in his musical performances on bagpipes at important occasions.
Off duty, Scott was known to savor the experience of fine Scotch whisky, a traditional Earth beverage. During his travels, he enjoyed sampling Scotch from across the galaxy, but his discerning palate preferred the genuine article, made in his homeland from native ingredients. Aboard the Enterprise, one of his most prized possessions was a bottle of what he termed “very, very, very old” Scotch whisky, which he kept hidden in a suit of ancient Earth battle armor. Scott shared this bottle with an adversary in 2268, part a brilliant ploy to help retake control of his ship when it had been captured by invaders from the Andromeda galaxy.
Montgomery Scott retired in 2294 and had planned to settle at the Norpin Colony, but freak circumstances led to his being suspended in a transporter beam for over seven decades, only to be rescued in 2368 by the crew of the Starship Enterprise-D. His friends and colleagues aboard that ship gifted him with the use of a Starfleet shuttlecraft, allowing the legendary engineer to spend his retirement exploring the cosmos on his own terms.
Montgomery Scott Blended Scotch Whisky honors this extraordinary man and his extraordinary accomplishments with an authentic beverage, hand crafted and lovingly distilled in Scotland from the finest malted barley. We hope you will join us in raising a glass to Starfleet’s finest engineer.
“Here’s to ye, lads!”
